Verbal Reasoning
Intent
Verbal Reasoning helps pupils understand the meaning of text, not just the words themselves, by enabling them to make inferences, connect ideas, and understand figurative language.
Pupils learn to analyse information, evaluate arguments, and form logical conclusions by using language to identify and solve problems, expressing ideas clearly and persuasively, both in writing and speaking, showing they are able to understand complex information and make informed decisions based on evidence.
Implementation
Verbal reasoning games and activities develop language skills and problem solving.
Verbal reasoning tests skill rather than knowledge. Exposing pupils to as many different variation of verbal reasoning problems as possible helps to build their confidence.
The many different types of questions are introduced as part of a spiral curriculum, the order shown on our medium term plans.
Impact
Confidence and success in verbal reasoning tasks leads to improvements across the curriculum, particularly in English and the humanities, playing an important role in comprehension.
