Maths
Intent
It is our intention to help children become enthusiastic, creative, articulate mathematicians who use their skills to deal with maths in the context of everyday life.
All children are challenged and encouraged to excel. Concepts are introduced using ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approaches enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, allowing them to have models and images to aid their understanding. Arithmetic and basic maths skills are practised regularly to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics. Once secure, knowledge is used to tackle reasoning and problem solving challenges of increasing complexity.
Implementation
Basic Maths skills are taught daily focusing on both acquiring and then using key mathematical skills as listed in the National Curriculum and White Rose Maths.
- Each topic includes a mixture of tasks to develop fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills.
- Lessons follow on from the last and lead into the next.
- Revision/review is used to re-visit previous learning and ensure Maths skills are embedded.
- Individual lessons have a plan. Staff know what they want pupils to learn, what resources are needed, practical/maths talk opportunities are mapped out.
- Children are taught through targeted differentiated group and mixed ability whole class lessons.
- Independence is encouraged through choice and support.
- Homework is set to develop and review children’s learning.
- Where possible, links are made with real-life and other subjects across the curriculum.
- As a problem solving school, children are asked to think outside the box.
Impact
As a result of our Maths teaching Eastcourt has:
- Engaged children who are challenged.
- Confident children who can talk about Maths and their learning and the links between Mathematical topics.
- Lessons that use a variety of resources to support learning.
- Different representations of mathematical concepts.
- Learning that is tracked and monitored to ensure all children make good progress.
